PRIME Minister John Howard today said the federal election was desperately close and it was possible Australia could face a hung Parliament.
A Newspoll in The Australian today and an ACNielsen poll published in Fairfax newspapers showed the Coalition and Labor were running neck and neck with both receiving 50 per cent voter support, on a two-party preferred basis.
The Coalition led Labor on primary votes with 45 per cent support compared to 40 per cent for Labor in the Newspoll.
In the ACNielsen poll, 46 per cent of respondents said they would give the Coalition their primary vote, compared to 40 per cent who would vote for Labor.
Mr Howard said the two-party preferred result was even, but Labor could win the election on preferences even if the Coalition got the most primary votes. “
