The Federal Opposition says it will spend $21 million on anti-smoking campaigns if it wins next month’s federal election.
Opposition health spokeswoman Julia Gillard says the money will be spent over four years on television advertisements that encourage people to quit smoking.
Ms Gillard says Labor wants to drive smoking rates down to 15 per cent.
‘Many people who do smoke, now want to give up and we will be helping with the motivation to give up,’ she said.
‘It stands as a stark contrast to the Howard Government only investing $2 million-a-year in anti-smoking programs and we don’t think that’s enough investment for something that kills 19,000 Australians every year.’
Ms Gillard says Labor will also introduce larger warnings that cover 50 per cent of both sides of the cigarette pack.”
